One of the greatest challenges for me was being able to step back and trust in other people’s skills and knowledge.” “I’ve learnt how I can manage myself and other people, which is something I’ll definitely apply in the workplace.”</image:caption>

Challenges are what makes life interesting and overcoming them makes life meaningful. It’s through these challenges that we can change for the better.” “I’d definitely recommend it to any youth who want to develop their character.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Memoirs - On Manoora, 1942</image:title>
<image:caption>“We went on to Singapore and arrived about the 6th or 7th of December. As we moved up the Harbour, we passed Prince of Wales and Repulse, two British battleships which had been sent out to try and dissuade the Japanese from entering the war. However, it was a little bit – it was rather late. Anyway, we berthed up near the Causeway to Malaya and again, I was lucky to have a letter of introduction to … some people called Thompson, Mr & Mrs Thompson. He was, I think, the General Manager of the Firestone rubber company in that part of the world. He had a lovely home, including a 9-hole golf course. Anyway, we had a dinner that night, quite a formal dinner. There were visitors, there were guests. It was all bright and merry and I was sent back to the ship in a car with a chauffeur … and much to the interest of my shipmates. I went aboard and went to sleep, then to be awakened by rumblings and bangings and we then realised, or were told, that Japan had come into the war. And after bombing Pearl Harbour and Singapore at the same time. And so … we didn’t have much time in Singapore. In fact, we scurried out the next day and while Prince of Wales and Repulse went up one side of Malaya, we went up the other side, the Western side, to Calcutta. Unfortunately, the poor Prince of Wales and Repulse were sunk. We, fortunately, had no trouble.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Memoirs - Geoff's parents, Frank and Doris Evans</image:title>
<image:caption>We were extremely lucky. We had wonderful parents, who, although not particularly well off, managed to send both of us to good schools. As well, we happened to have relatives, outside Benalla in the North-East of Victoria and also at Yanga Station, near Balranald, NSW where we spent school term holidays. My grandfather also had a wonderful, a very nice seaside home in Barwon Heads where we all spent Christmas holidays. So, though we didn’t realise it at the time, we were very fortunate in our younger years. (summarised from Geoff’s memoirs)</image:caption>

<image:title>Memoirs - HMAS Manoora</image:title>
<image:caption>September 1941…… “Manoora actually sailed within a few hours of me joining her – she sailed that night, so that when I woke up in the morning the ship was at sea and that was the first time I saw the Australian coastline from seaward. I could just see it in the background. We went north and I think we called at Cooktown, but we were actually on our way to Nauru, as guardship. Nauru had been attacked by a German raider, and it made a mess … Royaltex had been damaged, and so she was always – for a while she was under guard by an Australian war ship – this was Manoora’s turn. We seemed to be the other end of the world… a long, long way from Australia and the water was too deep to anchor so all we, as guardship could do was drift, in and out, depending on the tide.” (Transcribed from FG Evans’ voice recordings)</image:caption>

<image:title>Memoirs - Geoff next to Sir Dallas Brooks</image:title>
<image:caption>“Sir Dallas asked me …took me to his study and rather to my surprise said “When will you be able to move in?” and before I could reply he said “could you come in this weekend?” And this was Friday. And I said “yes, of course” and that’s what I did. It was a bit of a rush…it was during the Games and the lead up to the Games, that was enormously busy. I think that one week we had white tie…. evening dress on for a whole week in succession, every night in succession….and I met all sorts of interesting people. I had the opportunity of writing some of Sir Dallas Brooks’s speeches and it’s an interesting thing that somehow or another I instinctively knew how Sir Dallas would approach a particular subject, and what he would probably like to say or most certainly like to say and it always worked out.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Memoirs - Geoff and his cadets meet the Queen in 1952</image:title>
<image:caption>“In 1952 I was appointed Commanding Officer of a party of 10 cadets to be selected to go to United Kingdom for the second empire training course. We travelled in the liner Otranto.” (from Geoffrey Evans memoirs) “This would have to be one of the highlights of my life. On July 4th 1952, the 10 cadets from Australia, along with cadets from NZ and Canada, were paraded in the garden of Buckingham Palace, and were inspected by the Queen. At this time, she had not been through the Coronation ceremony.” (Graeme Stevens, Cadet) “What a day that was! That was the morning when you ordered me to have my first ever shave..!! Later in the afternoon, I saw the newspapers had a small front page shot of the Queen and myself... wow... the newspaper man was yelling whatever news was important but all I could see was that photo.” (excerpt from letter from Graeme Stevens, participating Cadet, 1952 to Geoff. 12th June, 2010.)</image:caption>

<image:title>Memoirs - HMAS Warramunga</image:title>
<image:caption>“Warramunga was one of 3 Australian ships…destroyers, known as the ‘improved tribal class’. 16 Tribals were built for the Royal Navy, nearly all of which were lost during the war. The ship was laid down at Cockatoo Island dockyard and was commissioned on the 23rd of November, under Captain Emile Dechaineux, a very fine officer. Commander Emile Dechaineux had DSC’d and commanded, it wasn’t his first destroyer command. We did our trials in December and in January and had a fairly uneventful start to the ship’s life. Our first joint venture, where we went up and bombarded Gasmata, a new island one night was all rather interesting as we had to get into the harbour and out again as fast as we could after carrying out the bombardment. But this was the first of many bombardments … we did all in conjunction with the United States Navy.”</image:caption>
