The need for scholarships to improve educational attainment in Tasmania remains high. We know scholarships increase student participation and have an immediate and beneficial impact on the lives of the recipients, their families, and the broader community. Your support reminds us we must never lose sight of the power of a gift to transform the lives of others and our heartfelt thanks to you for putting the needs of others first and choosing to make a difference.’

2020 Scholarship Update

In 2020, the Maritime College were granted a further scholarship for the duration of an undergraduate maritime degree. The recipient was Ryan Moreton. Ryan is in his second year of an undergraduate degree in Global Logistics and Maritime Management. After graduation, Ryan hopes to gain employment in the shipping industry, specifically within a port or shipping company.

Ryan Moreton, who completed his course (Global Logistics and Maritime Management) at the end of 2021 shared this reflection:

“While the monetary component of your support was especially helpful in my studies and life, the knowledge that there was an organisation which was invested and cared about my progress was a major driver for me in my studies.

“Thanks again for your support, it really does make a huge difference to people like me who, amongst their juggling of various responsibilities and passions, still find time to dedicate solely to their studies and achieve those goals alongside their other life goals.

“Throughout the semester I had been having discussions with various family friends and people within my network around where a good place to start in the shipping industry would be. Through these conversations, I was recommended to Flinders Shipbrokers based in Melbourne and after further discussions and calls with them, have signed a contract with them as a trainee within their business.”

In his final exams, Ryan received five high distinctions and one distinction; the best year's marks he had achieved throughout his three-year course.

Whilst studying, Ryan kept up his role as Vice-Commodore of the Tamar Yacht Club, co-ordinating many series, events and coaching programs within the club. He was selected as a semi-finalist in the Tasmanian Young Achiever Awards recently in the Community Service and Volunteering Category.

Congratulations Ryan, on a fine start to your career!
